THE WORD for the WEEK
Title: “The Responsibility of Detachment” 2/11/18
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of Faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfect our faith…” Hebrews 12:1-2
This walk of faith that Christians embark upon is one that involves hard work. After all, Faith is the substance of things hope for and is not seen today. Thus, we must keep the eye on the prize. Faith, daily requires us to give up anything that threatens our relationship with God. The Apostle Paul quoted above in the Hebrew scripture compares it to running a race to win the prize. We must keep our eye on Jesus and not ourselves. Trying to reason in our own mind or at the surrounding circumstances gives options that the enemy grabs a foothold to make us stumble. But, we are required to struggle against the sin with the power of the Holy Spirit.
You that are in the Weight loss program know that Dr. Dowe encourages you to develop the skill of exercising 150 to 200 minutes of both walking and weight training weekly. So, on days you go to the gym you dress lightly and strip off excess. You must “detach” and get rid of stuff. Paul states, “But, I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead. I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God through Christ Jesus is calling me” (Phil 3:13-14).
Jesus also told a parable to support “Detachment” as he speaks to the rich young man. The man asked Jesus “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus told him to sell his stuff and give the money to the poor to help others. The man failed because he sadly walked away not willing to “Detach” from stuff and possessions.
How can we “Detach” and run the race God has set before us? 1. Choose friends wisely. Wrong friends have values and activities that deter your course. 2. Drop certain activities. Weight gain may be an issue and causing health problems. Try dropping a few pounds and see how you feel. If your health improves, you may not be able to do or go to certain activities. 3. Get help for addictions. Pornography, gambling or alcohol may be your secret weight that disable you. Admit and get help.
Base your worth not on things that tear your down. Focus on worthiness that time can’t take away nor death can destroy like peace, joy, contentment, grace, faith, love for others, kindness, healthy, prosperous, victorious, self-control, God’s anointing and his presence (Gal 5:22).
Be Blessed! Dr. Dowe
