From my earliest youth, my enemies have Persecuted me.  But, they have never defeated me.  My back is covered with cuts…But, the Lord is good…He has cut me free… “Psalm 129:1-8

Collectively Psalms 120-134 are called “the Song of Ascents” and Psalms 129 is the 10th of the 15th.

They were sung from memory as pilgrims ascended towards Jerusalem for three worship festivals (Passover, Pentecost, and Sukkot) as described in Deuteronomy 16.  Eugene Peterson describes these Psalms as “songs for the road.”  They were often song to expressed their issue along the way.  Some have suggested that Hezekiah was the author.  Psalms 129 focused on persecutions and undermines the truth that we should have confidence in God bringing us through the tough times.

When tragedy and troubles hit remember these 3 things:

  • Face, it! If it’s your fault and you’ve blown it, Own it!

1 Peter 4:12 says, “Don’t be surprised at the fiery trials (Persecutions) you are going through, as if something strange were happening to you. Instead, be glad, for the trials make you a partner with Christ in his suffering… for then, the glorious Spirit of God rests upon you!”

2)Benefit from it!  The people if Israel had been Persecuted from early days going through the desert.  Because they went through previous experiences they were better able to withstand Persecutions once they got to the promise land.  Whatever, you plant, remember this: it will tell what harvest you will harvest!

Do Plant seeds of hope, love, joy, faith, trust in the plenteous promises of God’s Word and Do not plant seeds of hatred, bitterness and depression.  Don’t forces on the person(s) who trouble you, but focus on yourself and where your heart is in the matter.  Ask instead, “Lord what is it you want me to see about myself?”

3)Commit to the Lord!  You’ve gotta learn whom to turn it over to, turn Persecutions over to God.  Psalms 37:5 says, “Commit everything you do to the Lord, trust in him, and He will help you.  He will make your innocence radiant and the justice of you cause shine…!
