Title: “R U Thirsty”                                                   1/7/18

“On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus shouted to the crowds, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the scripture declares, Rivers of living water will flow from his head.”   John 7:37-38   NLT

This lesson is focused on Sanctification-the change God makes in our lives as we grow in Christ. As a believer, Christ enters your heart and so you receive the power of the life-giving Holy Spirit that was here at the creation of the world; that Holy Spirit frees us from the power of sin that leads to death (Ro 8:9).

Today’s lesson finds Jesus at the last day of The Festival of Shelters or Tabernacles which was one of seven holidays that the Israelites celebrated. There were 5 joyous and 2 solemn celebrations. This “climax of festival” was a special celebration involving the whole family; it taught members of all ages about God’s nature and what he had done by delivering them from Egypt’s slavery and offered a renewed commitment to God. In the scripture above, the “Holy Spirit” is referred to as living water. The “Spirit” empowers a renewed commitment and relationship with God through Christ. Jesus, it brings Eternal Life. Jesus shouted to the crowds “I bring you good news!” Sin has no more power over you!

The Holy Spirit teaches us truths like: 1) He will never leave us. 2) The world cannot receive it. 3) He lives in us and with us. 4). He reminds us of His WORD. 5) He teaches us all things. 6) He convinces us of our sins. 7). He brings glory to God. (Jo 14:17). The spirit gives a whole new way to look at life. For ex: It doesn’t make sense yet can be a miracle. Why would walking around Jericho walls 7 times make sense or wiping dirt over blind eyes? Or, telling me to leave a secure job and start a med practice without any backing? It’s certainly not my power or yours but the power of God who loves to start with nothing and make something.

This new year have a thirstiness in your inner heart and spirit. The Holy Spirit empowered Jesus followers at Pentecost (Acts 2) and has since continued to be available to empower all those who believe! Continue your Lifestyle Change plan seeking to fill your inner Spirit. Read the WORD daily!  Dr. Dowe
