The Word of the Week

God won’t be played

June 18, 2017
Our team member God won’t be played at Med Life Fit

“Again, the Israelites did evil in the Lord’s sight…They abandoned the Lord and no longer served him at all. So, the Lord burned with anger…and turned them over to the Philistines and Ammonites who began to oppress them…For 18 years…the Israelites were in great distress. Finally, they cried out to the Lord saying, “We have sinned against you, we have abandoned you as our God and have served the images of Baal…The Lord replied, “Did I not rescue you (before)…When you cried for help (before)…I helped you. I WILL NOT help you anymore…Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen! Let them help you in your hour of distress.”    Judges 10:6-14   (NLT)

The Word for the Week is focused in the Book of Judges which occurred about 1100 BC and the author is suggested to be Samuel. Judges is a book about 12 men and women leaders who delivered Israel from its oppressors. Judges is also a book about sin and its consequences.

As the story goes at this time, The Ammonites were severely oppressing the Israelites. Tola and Jair had been the judges for the previous 45 years but they were dead now. The people were experiencing a leadership vacuum. Instead of remaining faithful, they resorted to short-sightedness, blended in with the environment, started serving idol gods, seeking good feelings, easy rules, religious practices loosely regulated, a changed life was not demanded, immediate self-gratification and other sins. After a while, they became captives to their own desires and to the enemy in the form of the Ammonites and Philistines. The Israelites would to this scenario over and over again under different leadership, BUT this one time, God told them after they cried out for help, the Lord said, and I quote, “Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen! God won’t be played. We should include God in our daily events and at the center of our activities. We have to be mindful of our dependence upon God and obedience to his commands in every way. God eventually saves his people through his loving-kindness and merciful grace. But, rather than wait until the situation becomes desperate, turn to God first. He has the necessary resources to meet every need.
